Abstract

The rise of antimicrobial resistance and the limitations of conventional antibiotics have intensified the search for alternative therapeutic agents. This review article delves into the antimicrobial properties of novel phytochemical extracts derived from various plants. Phytochemicals, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds, have shown promising antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral activities. We systematically examine recent studies highlighting the effectiveness of these natural compounds against a range of microbial pathogens. The review also discusses the mechanisms of action, synergistic effects with existing antibiotics, and the potential for phytochemicals to serve as templates for new drug development. Furthermore, the challenges and future directions in the application of phytochemical extracts as antimicrobial agents are explored. This comprehensive analysis underscores the significant potential of plant-derived compounds in combating infectious diseases and offers insights into their integration into modern medical practice.
